Mental Health Awareness Day

on Tuesday, 10 October 2017. Posted in News

Today is Mental Health Awareness Day focussing on mental health in the workplace. There seems to be much more awareness of these issues and hopefully more openness and recognition of it as an illness so that is given the same consideration.
Wellbeing has become a big topic for workplaces and employers seem more concerned to create workplaces where wellbeing is taken into consideration. It seems that they are recognising its links to productivity and the bottom line.

Mental health and plants
There has been much research over the years about the calming effects of plants. Professor Margaret Burchett, of the University of Sydney, famously quantified just how even the presence of one plant on a desk can be measured. As you can see from the graph, her research showed that the presence of plants reduced feelings of stress by as much as 50%.

Other researchers, Prof Tove Fjeld and Helen Russell, showed how being around plants actually lowers the physical signs of stress by lowering pulse rates, blood pressure and even skin conductivity.
A Dutch study found that plants had an uplifting effect on those that were stressed or tired. Whilst self-reported sick-leave was reduced when employees could see plants from the desks.

Biophilia

Considering all we know and understand about biophilia and our need to connect with nature, we aren't surprised that being surrounded by plants and views of greenery make us feel better in many ways. Reducing stress levels is just one of these.
